One thing that is really interesting about Oath of the Motherland is that the player will pick up spells every few levels that will be added to their overall spell list, but won't take up a spot in their prepared spells. Wrath can set enemies whereas Presence will blind any creatures in the vicinity.Īs the player levels up with this build they will want to continue increasing their charism score as often as possible to increase the amount of damage that the Paladin's attacks deal, but they shouldn't forget to boost their strength skill as well. This will grant the player the ability to use two different Channel Divinity spells: Fiery Wrath and Fiery Presence. Then once the player reaches level three they can choose the Oath of the Motherland. This will greatly increase the chances of an enemy failing an attack. One of the first things the player will want to do is acquire the Protection Fighting Style at Level 2, which will allow them to impose disadvantage on enemies attacking allies within five feet of the Paladin. The idea is to keep this right around the charisma ability. After this players will want to ensure that they keep wisdom around 10 to 12, and then they can dump both dexterity and intelligence to boost their other skills however they wish. The player then also needs to ensure that they invest a decent amount of points in constitution, as well as this, will determine hit points. Not only does this allow for spellcasting, but it also grants the Paladin better chances to intimidate and persuade people. Those who want to make full use of the Paladin's spells will want to drop enough points in charisma to put it just under the strength score. The best bet is to try and increase the strength score to about 16 and then dump dexterity.Īfter that, the player will then want to invest points in the charisma score as well, as this is what the Paladin's spellcasting will be based on. Theoretically, they could increase dexterity instead and then use weapons that require that skill, they would lose out on a lot of the damage capabilities that the Paladin brings to the table. This will increase the Paladin's ability to use strength-based weapons. The first thing to keep in mind is that a Paladin is mostly a melee-focused fighter, so the player will want to begin by investing points in their strength ability score first.
